KU Leuven Fund for Childhood Epilepsy

Childhood epilepsy: one of the most common neurological disorders in children

More than 15,000 children in Belgium live with epilepsy. This makes childhood epilepsy one of the most frequent neurological disorders in childhood. The group of children with epilepsy is very diverse, and that requires a personalized approach in both medical treatments and psychosocial support of the child and the family.

Although doctors can now choose from a wide range of medications, there are still many forms of epilepsy about which we know too little. The long-term effects on brain development, behavior and cognitive functioning have also not been sufficiently studied.

More research and high-quality care are therefore crucial.

The KU Leuven Fund for Childhood Epilepsy is committed to developing a leading European centre for research, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in children. The fund supports integrated total care, clinical studies and fundamental research into new and better treatments.

The KU Leuven Fund for Childhood Epilepsy is advised by a scientific council consisting of international experts in childhood epilepsy.
