Working with epilepsy

Most people with epilepsy have the same opportunities to work as anyone else. A lot depends on the type of epilepsy:

  • the form of epilepsy,
  • how often seizures occur,
  • and the specific epilepsy syndrome.

Seizures that affect awareness can lead to more dangerous situations than focal seizures where awareness remains intact.

The nature of the job also matters. In Belgium, there are restrictions for certain jobs in the transport sector. For example, people with epilepsy cannot work as a pilot, bus driver, or train operator.

It’s important to tell the occupational health doctor about your epilepsy during the medical assessment. This way, the doctor can determine whether you are medically fit for the job and whether any adjustments or limitations are needed.
