Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS)

Treatment with a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS)
For some children with epilepsy that is difficult to treat, a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) can help. This is a small device placed under the skin in the chest. A thin wire runs from the device to the vagus nerve in the neck.

The stimulator sends short electrical signals to this nerve at regular intervals. These signals also affect the brain. This can help reduce the number of seizures and make children more alert. However, becoming completely seizure-free is rare.

The stimulator comes with a magnet. If a seizure starts, or during a seizure, you can move the magnet over the device. Sometimes this helps shorten the seizure or even stop it. The system is designed with safety features, so there is no risk of overstimulation.
