Traveling with a Child with Epilepsy: Tips for a Smooth Trip
Good preparation makes traveling easier and safer. Keep these points in mind:
- Provide medication on time
Check well in advance how much medication you have left. If needed, request a new prescription and consider asking for an extra prescription with the generic drug name. This way, you can get the medication under a different brand name abroad. - Bring emergency medication
Always carry enough emergency medication. Some emergency medicines require a special certificate for use abroad—ask your doctor for this in time. A written medication schedule signed by your doctor can also be helpful. - Medication on flights
Pack medication in both your checked luggage and your carry-on, in case baggage gets lost. For liquid medication in carry-on luggage, a medical certificate is usually required. - Adjust for Time Zones
Traveling to a different time zone? Discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand and create an adapted medication schedule to keep treatment effective. - Watch out for triggers
When planning your trip, consider possible seizure triggers such as heat, flashing lights, fatigue, or irregular sleep. Adjust your itinerary to minimize these risks.
