Participation in activities
Children with epilepsy should be able to take part in all school activities, such as PE, swimming, field trips, and school camps.
These activities are not only important for social development but also for a healthy lifestyle—just like for any other child.
Most sports are no problem, but for activities like swimming or cycling in traffic, it’s important to provide extra supervision. Field trips and school camps are also part of school life and should be encouraged.
Keep in mind that during these activities, children may sometimes forget their medication, be extra excited, and sleep less well than at home. This can increase the risk of seizures. However, this should never be a reason to exclude a child with epilepsy from going on camp. With good preparation and clear agreements, these experiences can be safe and enjoyable.
