Jo's research
Dr. Jo Sourbron is both a pharmacist and a medical doctor, currently specializing in clinical genetics at Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent). He has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven (Belgium) since 2018.
His research focuses on genetic and rare forms of epilepsy and clinical studies on drug-resistant epilepsy. Building on his PhD work on the mechanism of action of fenfluramine, he has a strong interest in (pre-)clinical studies involving fenfluramine and other serotonergic (5-HT) compounds for drug-resistant epilepsies.
Within the Network for Therapy in Rare Epilepsies (NETRE), Dr. Sourbron is one of the leading experts on Sunflower Syndrome, a form of generalized epilepsy characterized by photosensitivity and typical hand-waving seizures (HWA). Currently, a global REDCap survey is underway to better characterize this syndrome, along with studies aimed at objectively quantifying HWA.
